I kind of like these "Stewart/Colbert 2008" bumper stickers I've been seeing lately.

My vote would be for Al

My vote would be for Al Gore(again). If Gore had been awarded the election in 2000, by 2004 he would have faced a backlash by Republicans clamoring for a stronger response to the terrorism threat than the U.N. sanctions and other means Gore probably would have employed.
This may have resulted in the 2004 election of a Colin Powell or John McCain, moderate Republicans with a strong military background. This scenario would be a vast improvement over the leadership we have seen from the executive branch the past six years.

Only when it comes to college sports ...
"Norse" just doesn't sound as impressive as "Hawkeye."

Thanks for settin' me straight!
Go Hawkeyes.

I forgot that the entire

I forgot that the entire state embraces the moniker "Hawkeye" and not just U of I alumni.

The U of I grads at the Herald office are:

Tim McGovern, sports editor

Jeff Engstrom, advertising representative

Mark Olson, Herald editor

Nestled among those

Nestled among those cornfields in the northeastern corner is another great reason to spend some time in Iowa - Luther College.

Mark, are you counting this sometimes-Herald office visitor in your "Hawkeyes" list?? I called the great state - and Mabe's Pizza and the Whippy Dip - home during for four years.

Other Hawkeye guesses are ad-man Jeff Engstrom (Newton)and sports-guy McGovern ... Iowa affiliation unknown. Last guess is new writer Chuck.

There's a University in IOWA?

I thought there were only cornfields there.

I'm forming an exploratory

I'm forming an exploratory committee.

As a University of Iowa alumnus, I'm confident I'll do well in the Iowa caucuses.

As a side note: Did you know there are three Hawkeyes who work in the Herald office? Anyone who guesses who they are gets bragging rights.

"Anyone in the newspaper business would be a great president. "

Are you announcing your candidacy, Mark?

I agree with the Ben Franklin comments.

Anyone in the newspaper business would be a great president.

And he did invent bifocals, so nowadays he'd have a lock on the Baby Boomer votes.

Ben Franklin seems like he would have been a lock for president in the decades following the birth of the country.

Forget that he is dryer then

Forget that he is dryer then toast, and had problems with giving a good speech, but Walter Mondale would have made a good president.
He was one of the first VP's to be given duties other then going to funerals, and his knowledge in both domestic and foreign issues is unusual with todays presidential canidates.
He always came across and still does as a thoughtful person, and one who could see the big picture-sometimes a year down the road.
Doubt if he would have ever uttered those immortal words-Bring Em On!
Oh well, we'll never know

Who are the best non-presidents?

We all have our opinions as to the best U.S. presidents. However, how about the best non-presidents?

Who are candidates you think would have been great presidents, but never made it?
