"Hellboy 2: The Musical" opens today. Well, actually it's "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, but it does star Ron Perlman, who is a Chanhassen Dinner Theatres alumnus.

Amy Adams and Perlman must be the biggest stars to have emerged from Chanhassen institution.

I can't help but wonder what musical prepared Perlman for Hellboy. "Oklahoma" perhaps?

A-list news:

* Former Chanhassen resident Alec Soth has an exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, through Aug. 10. The exhibit includes 26 prints from his "Sleeping by the Mississippi" series.

* Debbie Turner Larson (Marta, from the classic movie "The Sound of Music") was recently approved for a big account. Her business, Debbie Turner Originals, is one of four Minnesota companies selected as a preferred florist by planners of the Republican National Convention, Sept. 1-4 in St. Paul.

Carver County A-Lister Amy Adams’ popularity has been growing over the past few years.

However, she recently seems to have shot into the Hollywood stratosphere.

At the Academy Awards, she performed one of three songs nominated for an Oscar from her summer Disney movie “Enchanted.”

And she also graces THREE magazine covers currently on the stands, including Vanity Fair’s annual Hollywood issue, Interview, and Elle.

We’re bound to see more of her this spring, with the spring release of “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.”

In the Interview article, Adams gives a big shout out to her Chanhassen Dinner Theatre “family”:

“Eventually I ended up in Minnesota at a theater company where you did not have to wait tables. … But it was also remarkable to me how talented the people in these theaters were. When I arrived at Chanhassen in Minnesota I was stunned – the dancers were awesome and all of them could sing. I ended up staying there for three years. There were times when I first arrived in Los Angeles where I would pine for that time when I knew exactly what was in front of me, and every day was the same … The people I worked with there were also a great family to me… ."

Amy Adams was added to our Carver County A-List as an honorary member. I thought she was a good representative of Chanhassen Dinner Theatre alumni who have gone on to star in TV shows and movies.

Don Herbert, the Waconia native, who most know as "Mr. Wizard," died on June 12 from cancer.

National Public Radio has a story on its Web site.

Hats off to a guy who made generations of kids excited about science.

Jim "The Baron" von Raschke

Jim "The Baron" von Raschke has been added to the A-List, after he personally confirmed his residency in Carver County. True to his tough-guy persona, he also said "I have to break someone's leg tonight." (He was riffing on theater's break-a-leg motto. Von Raschke is currently acting in "The Barron," a play based on his life.)

Tony Denman, actor and former Chanhassen resident, was also added to the list.

Regarding Baron Von Raschke, I was told by a couple of neighbors and one of the guys who worked on my well, Maury Leuthner, that he owned and lived in my house (Chaska mailing address in Laketown Township) sometime in the 70's. I heard he lives in Burnsville now.

I had a chance to visit Art James at his home in Chaska (again, actually, Laketown township) a few years ago. He was very friendly and gracious to me. I remember seeing him on the "Who, What or Where" game when I was a kid.

Larry Graham, rock and roll innovator, has been added to the Carver County A-List. He was bassist with Sly and the Family Stone. (One of the band's signature hits was "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)."

There must be a few current and former pro athletes with ties to Chaska.

For a few years in the 1970s, former Minnesota Twins baseball player and first-baseman Rich Reese co-owned a bar in Chaska, appropriately named “First Base.”

Does anyone know any other professional athletes in our neck of the woods?

In fact, the rock star Prince is probably the only world-famous resident that calls our wonderful county home (and most people think he lives in Minneapolis).
