Election '08 may be going down as historic, but it was also incredibly quirky. Not only did it feature the first viable female presidential candidate, the first viable African-American presidential candidate and the first viable female vice presidential candidate, but a host of new technologies offering variety in election coverage.
CNN continued to amaze me last night. They have been playing with new technology since Election '08 kicked off and the dividends paid out on Election Day. John Roberts is now a pro at that interactive television screen thingy (while other poor anchors like Charlie Gibson are just learning) allowing us to zoom in on state counties and see how they are voting now and how they voted in the last presidential election. But the most striking moment of the night (arguably more so than their declaration that Obama had won the election) was the moment they introduced holograms into their coverage.
Physically, reporter Jessica Yellin was in Chicago, ready to cover Obama's campaign for the night. But, there, through the magic of Microsoft (or whatever company dreamed this up) Yellin appeared to be standing in the studio (albeit with a Princess Leia-esque glow about her). The screen read "Jessica Yellin via hologram." Chalk one up for CNN. That was noteworthy. I'm not sure what it added to the coverage, but it sure was cool and it left me wondering how I could get a Johnny Depp or an Orlando Bloom "beamed" into my living room....
What stood out to you this election cycle?
