Blogging Mollee: Chaska Parks & Rec get a view of their television counterparts

Last night, the second episode of Amy Poehler's first solo television venture "Parks and Recreation" aired on NBC. The show follows the Parks & Rec department in Pawnee, Indiana. In the pilot episode, Amy Poehler's character declared it her mission to turn an abandoned development project into a park after a neighboring resident fell into the "pit" and broke both legs.

It's a pretty funny show - but that's just my opinion as a journalist. For a better reaction, I asked employees of Chaska's Parks, Recreation and Arts department what they thought.

Aimee Peterson, recreation coordinator, watched the pilot episode with colleagues at a premiere party in Minneapolis last week.

"The beginning was funny," she said. "Once it got into the story, it lost some of its momentum.

"I thought it was entertaining though," she added.

As far as the show's realism, Peterson says not so much.

"When they're talking about having this park in two months, we were all 'Oh yeah, you wouldn't get anything in two months. Maybe two years'," she said.

Peterson also commented on the show's Parks and Recreation director who tells viewers in the first episode that he doesn't believe in building parks.

"That's definitely not Tom (Redman, Chaska's Parks & Rec director)," she said.

Overall, Peterson said the show was fun and the premise "a neat idea."

"We joked how we should submit storylines," she said, declining to expand on what situations she and her co-workers might like to see on TV.

"They exaggerate a lot of things," Peterson added.

But despite it all, she's still intrigued enough to keep tuning in.

"I'll give it a few more episodes," she said.

I used to work for a county park department for a High School summer job and I haven't seen the show. I do have some stories though about real events that would make pretty funny episodes. I did chuckle at "It's a pretty funny show - but that's just my opinion as a journalist." Not sure if that was meant to be witty but it was.
