American Idol: Top 8 Ladies are lackluster
March 5, 2008 - 8:58pm — Mollee Francisco
Sigh. The guys provided so many interesting performances last night that the women were a major disappointment tonight. Mostly boring song choices. Did these girls listen to music in the 80s? Some of them were alive then. The final six ladies will have a tall order next week when they tackle the Beatles catalog. It's not a theme night that lends itself to women as much as it does the guys and coming off the week the guys just had, they could run away with the show yet again. What did you think? Here are my thoughts: Singer: Asia'h Epperson Song: I Wanna Dance With Somebody Rants & raves: Whitney right off the bat. Big risk. Good energy. She didn't really do anything different with the song, but it was a decent vocal. A bit nasally at times. She's certainly no Whitney and I didn't get all excited, but I'm sure she'll pass through to the Top 12. Kady Malloy Who Wants to Live Forever Queen? Seriously, Kady. For someone who should have gone home last week, you are going down in a big ball of flames. You needed a miracle and it wasn't this song. I don't even know this song. Of all the 80s songs you could have chosen, this was not the right one. Barely a note in tune. Not Top 12 material. Bye bye. Amanda Overmyer Hate Myself For Loving You I was disappointed the second I heard she was singing Joan Jett. I know she loves Joan Jett, but she's loved the songs she sang the last two weeks and how'd that work out for her? Not so well. This was her chance to give in a bit to the judges comments and I don't think she did it. The judges, even Simon, are extraordinarily positive tonight. What's in those cups? Carly Smithson I Drove All Night I did not see this song coming from Carly. Still not what I would have chosen for her among all the 80s possibilities. A good performance but she didn't knock my socks off. Kristy Lee Cook Faithfully No. Sorry. Such a great song and Kristy did nothing for it. Randy was right when he said no one will ever top Journey's version. I don't think Kristy was worthy of tackling this song and her performance proved it. Ramiele Malubay Against All Odds Who would have guessed Phil Collins would get so much play during 80s night? In any case, it was another pretty good performance. She got a chance to show off those big vocals of hers. It wasn't an exciting performance but it was good enough to move along. Brooke White Love Is A Battlefield This is the girl I'm rooting for. She picks good songs and then sings them well. Liked the stripped down acoustic version of Pat Benetar's hit. She's stayed pretty true to her folk pop roots and it works for her. Syesha Mercado Saving All My Love For You Whitney bookends the show. I guess Syesha and Asia'h will duke it out. Syesha wins. Great vocal. Very Whitney-esque. She hits all the big, tough notes. High degree of difficulty and it worked. Top performances: Brooke White, Syesha Mercado
Most likely to go home: Kady Malloy, Kristy Lee Cook

Ok, on instant playback, I...
Back to page topOk, on instant playback, I have to say I was a bit harsh on Amanda. I just had my heart set on something else for her to sing and was blinded (deafened) by my disappointment.
Also, Carly's pants were horrible. The end.

Where was I when they passed...
Back to page topWhere was I when they passed out the Amanda Overmyer Kool-aid? I clearly missed that week, because I think all of her performances have been terrible. She sounds like a 60-year-old woman who's smoked three packs a day her whole life. And she shouts. And she has no performance skills. She never looks at the camera, and she always looks nervous. I just don't get the hype.
As for positives, I really enjoyed Brooke's performance. I love that song, and she brought her own style to it. Bravo, Brooke!
I liked Carly's performance, but like Mollee, I wonder about those pants. Show off the tats, that's fine. But those were not the right pants for any outfit.
I also agree with your choices to go home. Kady and Kristy...your time is up!
No surprise here - Kady...
Back to page topNo surprise here - Kady Malloy is the first to get the boot tonight. She is followed by Asia'h Epperson. I guess Kristy Lee Cook could get her 10th place finish after all.

For the past two weeks, I've...
Back to page topFor the past two weeks, I've had to put the Tuesday and Wednesday AIs on the DVR and then haven't had a chance to watch till Thursday -- then I have a boy-girl-elimination show marathon without a whole lot of time to think about who should go.
Kady was no surprise, but I don't remember Asia'h singing poorly enough to get the boot (I would have expected Syesha to go before her after this week's song choices).
And, even though I'm a fellow Hoosier, I don't really get the draw to Amanda Overmyer, either. Even if I thought she was a great singer, I have a hard time getting past the Cruella Deville hair -- but don't tell her I said that because I think she could probably beat me up ;-)
