American Idol: Top 24 AKA "The most talented crop of contestants to date"
February 13, 2008 - 9:44pm — Mollee Francisco
...Or so they keep telling us. So here they are, the top 24 contestants that will now sing for their supper and our votes. Do you have any early favorites? Who will you be casting your votes for? Who was robbed? See my thoughts on the contestants below. (NMA = needs more airtime) Top 12 men David Cook - Daughtry wannabe. Let's see how he does if he makes it to the theme nights. David Archuleta - Hard not to like this kid (at least now). He's young (16) and adorable and has a great voice. Danny Noreiga - Is it bad to say that I'm going to be looking forward to his clothing choices as much as his song choices? I think his flamboyance might make things interesting. Jason Castro - NMA Luke Menard - NMA Michael Johns - I loved Mig Ayesa - the Australian contestant on the first season of Rockstar: INXS so I have to admit I'm hoping this Aussie will measure up. I loved his rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm "intrigued." Robbie Carrico - Another rocker. I guess when Chris Daughtry (who is widely believed to have been robbed of the Season 4 title) is racking up the album sales and awards, you give it another go. Chikeze Eze - Well the name is something else. Jason Yaeger - NMA David Hernandez - I like two of the three Davids right off the bat. I think this guy has a solid voice and can interpret songs well. He may surprise a few people if he can pick some good songs early on. Colton Berry - I was sorry to see him take the place that could have been Kyle Ensley. I guess they're not looking for a geek to sheik makeover this year. Sorry Clay Aiken/Kevin Covias/Jon Peter Lewis/Taylor Hicks fans. Garrett Haley - NMA Analysis: Three Davids, two Jasons and only one African American man make the cut. Wowza. I was sad to see Josiah Leming get the axe. I liked that kid (living in his car story or not). He did Mika's "Grace Kelly" which I thought was fun. He could have been good for some fun song choices, not to mention a great dramatic rollercoaster ride of emotions. Oh well. Top 12 girls Carly Smithson - I like this Irish lass. She's got the tattoos, but also a sweet disposition. Good song interpretation as well. Amanda Overmyer - Reminds me of the B-52s singer. Hope she watched Gina Glocksen's demise last year and took notes. Kristy Lee Cook - American Idol loves a sweet blonde, don't they? I hope we don't have to hear "Amazing Grace" every time her neck is on the line. Brooke White - Another blonde, but this one I find far less cloying than Cook. I think she's going to be a work in progress, but she could also be the kind of girl that shows an evolution which voters (and the judges) love. Alexandrea Lushington - NMA Ramiele Malubah - NMA Syesha Mercano - Strong voice, cute girl. She'll have to show great personality and consistency to eclipse the forceful African American trio from last year's show. Kady Maloy - NMA Alaina Whitaker - NMA Amy Davis - NMA Asia'h Epperson - Same story as Mercano. Great voice and personality. Hopefully they, too, took notes from last year. Joanne Borgella - Thankfully she took the final spot instead of Cardin McKinney. She definitely had the stronger voice but she'll have her work cut out for her to separate herself from Mercano and Epperson. Analysis: I've heard Simon say a guy's going to win this one in recent interviews and he might be right. There are certainly some strong females but the men seem to be hoarding the majority of the talent and interesting personas so far. We'll see what happens next week. Are you as excited as I am? |
Excited for Idol?...
Back to page topExcited for Idol? No.
Excited for the return of the best Idol blog in the galaxy. Yes!
I haven't watched nearly...
Back to page topI haven't watched nearly enough of the auditions to warrant any strong opinions about anyone, but the one guy who kept showing up whenever I did have AI on was Kyle Ensley. Robbed!! And I loved Simon's speech about him not agreeing with the decision. I've always liked Simon, but I'm almost smitten with him this season. When he's on your side, he's really on your side.
As for the rest of the guys, I enjoyed the boy living in his car, glad to see he made it. And I saw Danny Noriega for the first time last night, so I don't know how consistent he is in his performances, but the thought did cross my mind that he could be this season's Sanjaya. I hope he proves me wrong.
On the girls' side, I'm glad that Joanne and the Irish lady made it. (My husband points out to me that the Irish lady has already released an album...hmmm.) Kristy Lee Cook can be voted off, and I almost feel that way about Brook, but she may redeem herself.
I guess I had more opinions than I thought!
A busy schedule this week...
Back to page topA busy schedule this week has me waiting to see Hollywood Week and the announcement of the top 24 until tonight -- or maybe tomorrow, so I actually scrolled past the list above so that I don't ruin the surprise (at least not beyond what my one sister already told me before I could start shouting, "LA-LA-LA-LA!!!" into the telephone).
I do plan to tune in, whether live or by DVR for the season, which will be my second full one after getting dragged onto the bandwagon my my mom and sisters mid-season three years ago.
It's become quite the bonding agent among us and we often call one another during and after the show (both sisters are in Indiana and mom's in Florida).
I'm ready and I hope it's better than last year!
I actually watched AI in...
Back to page topI actually watched AI in live time, talked about who I liked and didn't like with my husband and Neighbor Girl -- then forgot to vote!
Just got off the phone with my sister, who offered up her likes and dislikes (we're not in total agreement but we're both thoroughly disappointed with our fellow Hoosier, Luke Menard).
We both LOVE Michael Johns (who I keep calling John Michaels -- probably because my brother is a John Michael) and she loves/I like Jason Castro (the guy with the dreadlocks).
I'm hoping to say goodbye to Leif Garrett lookalike Garrett Haley and she wants Chikeze to be the first to go. Since there are two of each gender leaving this week, I'll have to sleep on my second choice -- not sure Chikeze needs to go yet; I'm leaning toward Colton Berry.
I'm impressed with David Archuleta, who I keep referring to as "that 16-year-old" and have to keep being told that he's now 17, and I'm a little frightened by Danny Noreiga, whose singing voice does not match his outward appearance (but I liked it better than Simon did and I laughed out loud when he double-snapped him).
Robbie Carrico is going to be a fun contestant. I just hope he doesn't wear the bandana every week.
