American Idol: Top 10 Ladies: Sayonara Seventies

Thank goodness for small favors. Despite being 70s night, we only had to endure one disco song. Hallelujah.

The song choices, much like the70s, were all over the place, but in the end, the girls lose out to the boys this week.  

Here are my thoughts:

Singer: Carly Smithson

Songs: Crazy on You

Rants & raves: Well she sure showed those
powerhouse vocals during this song. It wasn't the most
personality-packed tune (at times I thought she looked scared - maybe
that was intensity), but it was a good choice for her. 

Syesha Mercado

Me & Mr. Jones

Not a great arrangement choice. This song is better when it's not so
slow. She sounded great during the chorus notes but the verses were
languished and boring. Still, "Me and Mr. Jones" - those four words
sung so big should be enough to help her on to the next round. 

Brooke White

You're So Vain

Hmmm. A Carly Simon tune? Could it be "You're So Vain"?? Of course
it is. Turns out that it is an awesome choice for Brooke White. She's
delivers a great vocal in the exact vein (not vain) of what she should
be singing. Folk pop works well for her. A nice job. 

Ramiele Malubay

Don't Leave Me This Way

Ugh disco. Thus the danger of 70s night. Disco never translates well
on Idol. It has yet to serve a contestant positively and this
performance is no exception. Ramiele looked and sounded like she
stepped out of the 70s but the song was not for me. Also, grey is a bad
color to wear on television. It always looks like sweatpants. Word to
the wise. 

Kristy Lee Cook

You're No Good

Kristy's going to have to find a way to separate herself from
comparisons to Brooke White right now and she did nothing to help
herself tonight. She sounded good on the verses, but overall, the
arrangement was too slow and her performance was awkward. 

Amanda Overmyer

Carry On My Wayward Son

Amanda's problem is the same problem I would have if I was on the
show. I would choose songs that I love to listen to, not necessarily
that I can sing well. This is a great song and she sounded pretty good
in the beginning, but the verses were a disaster. 

Alaina Whitaker

Hopelessly Devoted To You

Nice control over the vocals but not much feeling and a few bad
notes at the wrong times. I don't think see the whole dark horse thing
panning out at this point. We'll see.

Alexandrea Whitaker

If You Leave Me Now

I actually kind of dug this. I liked the urban vibe she was bringing
to it. I just wish it would have been even more urbanized. I think it
has potential to be nicely updated if done right but there were some
times when it was brilliant and other times when it sounded like a
lounge performance. 

Kady Malloy

Magic Man

Well Kady did Carly a favor in making her Heart performance look
that much better. Kady sounded off throughout the entire song. Yowza!

Asia'h Epperson 

All By Myself

Ok, didn't we agree to retire this song from the Idol catalog? Every
year some one takes the stage thinking they can sing this song and, big
surprise, they can't compare to the greats. Asia'h was no exception.
She missed opportunities to power the song and have her 'Wow'
moment.

Most likely to go home: Kady Malloy, Amanda Overmyer
