American Idol: Rock N Droll
May 6, 2008 - 8:16pm — Mollee Francisco
Some theme nights seem to have too few songs to choose from, while others seem so vast that the contestants' minds are blown to bits. I think that was the case tonight. Where else would you expect to hear Duran Duran, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley? Talk about hitting random on your iPod. It didn't seem to do anyone much good to have so many songs to choose from. No one blew me away tonight - a bit disappointing considering we are getting down to the wire. Will it be a David-squared finale as everyone is predicting or will we get a Daughtry-like shocker tomorrow night? I guess we can only wait and see. In the meantime, I'll be placing my votes for David Cook. It would be one dull finale without him, me thinks. What did you think? Who did you love? Who did you hate? Who surprised you the most? Here are my thoughts: Singer: David Cook Songs: Hungry Like The Wolf/Baba O'Reilly Rants & Raves: David C. didn't seem incredibly enthused by "Hungry Like the Wolf". He sounded decent, but the performance lacked some of his usual pizazz, some of his rock star vibe. Second song, FANTASTIC choice. He'll get major cred for that. Fantastic lighting. I liked what he did with the song in the time he had. My only complaint was that it ended too soon. I could have used a couple minutes more. Syesha Mercado Proud Mary/A Change is Gonna Come
Boring beginning to "Proud Mary," but then she spun around a few times and BOOM! seemed to come to life. Hello Tina Turner! She looked like a star, but why not start off with a powerhouse punch like that? And where's the sass?
I Shot the Sheriff/Mr. Tambourine Man Is this a sign of life from Jason Castro or just a chance to flick the dreads around? Whatever it was, he looked a bit awkward but sounded kinda good and it was nice to see him jiving a bit. Isn't there a theory that people near death always rear to life in their final moments? I think that's what happened here. As soon as he gets a little bounce in his stoner step, Jason falls into this season's lost lyrics trap (but is that really so bad to do on a Bob Dylan song?) I'm almost positive this is the end for him but it seems pretty clear that he's OK with that. At this point, he hardly seems to be trying anymore. David Archuleta Stand By Me/Love Me Tender This guy needs his own material to croon to. Yes, he can sing, but I am so sick of him singing every song with that same schlocky inspirational, glee club approach. It's old. Same story, different song for "Love Me Tender." A smart choice for his voting audience? Sure. But why doesn't David A. get crap for staying in the pocket with all of his songs? I guess all of those screaming tweens in the audience can't be denied. Top performances: David Cook with Baba O'Reilly Most likely to go home: Jason Castro TELL US: Do you have a favorite performance from last night? Who's going home?

Although I have a hard time...
Back to page topAlthough I have a hard time believing it won't be Jason who goes home, my husband thinks David C. was trying to get kicked off tonight. His theory is that he chose songs most of the tween AI fans won't know so they won't vote for him, and while his performances weren't "wow" as in previous weeks, they weren't so bad that he still wouldn't be attractive to record label execs if he is booted tomorrow.
But, to reiterate, I will be shocked if Jason is still standing Wednesday night.
David Cook and Jason Castro...
Back to page topDavid Cook and Jason Castro both can't be giving up before the finale. I refuse to watch David A. vs. Syesha battle. Refuse!

Back to page topI do wonder how big Jason's fanbase is. Is it enough to pull ahead of Sayesha and get her kicked off? She's been in the bottom three before...has Jason (I don't remember)?
I hope that David Cook stays around, even if he was trying to throw it. He's the only one I care to watch anymore.
I had to remind my husband...
Back to page topI had to remind my husband that we weren't watching a boxing match as he was screaming at the TV listening to the judges diss Jason.
"That's who he is!" he was shouting when the judges hated Jason's Bob Marley. "That's the kind of music he does and that's what got him on the show!"
When the dust had settled, my husband said he thought Jason should have gone home weeks ago -- and it's likely he'll go home this week -- but he didn't deserve to be run out on a rail.
Then there was Syesha, who has been surprising me with her voice because I was never very impressed with her. And, of course, my husband was slack-jawed at the negativity for her from the judges.
"This is such a farce!" he was yelling at them. He still insists that the judges already know who is going to come out on top and they are steering voters toward "their" Idol.
All it did for my husband was make him commandeer my cell phone and sit there for an hour calling Jason's numbers over and over (he opted to vote for Jason because he thinks Syesha has a larger fan base to pull her through) on both our phones. I believe we voted more than 30 times for him, but I doubt it will help.

Back to page topAfter weeks of trying to get kicked off, Jason Castro is finally put out of his misery, setting the stage for a showdown between Syesha and the Davids next week.

Did anyone else think that...
Back to page topDid anyone else think that Jason looked like a bird set free after he was voted off. You could almost see the relief wash across his face as if a huge burden was lifted from his shoulders.
Whatever you think of him, you have to admit that his exit package was pretty endearing. He was definitely an Idol first in the personality department. And *sigh* how I shall miss those eyes.

Back to page topHe definitely seemed to be bored with the whole Idol thing -- though it was fun seeing him as a toreador in his final Ford commercial.
