American Idol: Beatlemania!

No votes yet

Beatles night is now in the books and it was interesting to say the least. Some contestants had a hard days night while others really came together with their songs.

No one went too far out on a limb with their song choice and tackled "I Am the Walrus" or "Yellow Submarine" (where is Danny Noriega when you need him?) but I'm sure at least Sir Paul and Ringo can rest assured that they retain the definitive versions of most of their songs.

What did you think? Who did you love? Who did you hate? Who surprised you the most?

Here are my thoughts:

Singer: Syesha Mercado

Song: Got To Get You Into My Life

Rants & raves: Not the strong start I was hoping for (considering the hype of the night). I thought it was a cheesy arrangement that did little to get me excited about Beatles night. Syesha had some fair moments, but this was not her night to shine. Also, someone seemed to have missed the memo that Idol wasn't doing 90s night this week. What was up with that hair?

Chikezie

She's a Woman

I loved the bluegrass arrangement at the beginning. Chikezie gave the song a great soul vibe. He's a natural performer and upbeat tunes like this allow him to show that. This is the performance that should have opened the show.

Ramiele Malubay

In My Life

I did not hate this nearly as much as the judges. On the contrary, I thought Ramiele finally showcased that mature voice that defies her years. She had nice control and pacing and delivered a lovely song in a simple fashion. I was happy with it.

Jason Castro

If I Fell

Yay! The guitar is back. There is such a lovely tone to his voice and I like the minor changes he made to the song. He's not a powerhouse singer, but he remains true to his style. I can tell what kind of album he would do and I am ready to buy it and enjoy a lazy Sunday morning listening to it. I liked this song, but I still would have loved to hear him sing "Yesterday" tonight.

Carly Smithson

Come Together

Whoa. Holy vocals. Carly was certainly blowing on this song. She was a bit awkward on the stage, maybe not used to it yet, but no one in the competition could have sung this song like she did tonight.

David Cook

Eleanor Rigby

I didn't want to like this guy (it must be that hair plastered against his forehead) but what a great song choice. It worked well with his gritty rock treatment. And for the second week in a row, David C. gives us a song that could easily be a hit today (I would totally buy it).

Brooke White

Let It Be

Nice performance. Glad she sung it straight. It was a good vocal and she looked very natural at the piano. Plus, she's still so dang likable. It's hard not to root for her. Not my favorite of her performances, but she'll be back next week.

David Hernandez

I Saw Her Standing There

This did not work for me at all. It paled so much in comparison to the original (or even subsequent covers). Overall it came off very cheesy for me.

Amanda Overmyer

You Can't Do That

I still can't understand half of what she says but I liked her a lot on this song. It was a great choice - I think her best of the season. And finally she shows us that she can indeed sing (instead of grumbling through every song) and even pulls out a glory note.

Michael Johns

Across the Universe

Good vocal, but a lackluster performance at a time when he needed a big hit. He's probably got a week or two to hit one out of the park, but it's getting to be all hype, no delivery.

Kristy Lee Cook

Eight Days A Week

Honky tonk Beatles. No. It's time to say goodbye. (Frankly, I can't handle any more video of her on that horse, much less another disasterous performance).

David Archuleta

We Can Work It Out

Lucky little David A. gets the cushy final slot for the second time in just a few weeks. Interesting. And he blows it! Whether it was the pressure or not, David A. had a bad week. Forgets the lyrics, murders the song, treats the Beatles like musical theater. Yikes. I'm in total agreement with the judges that he should have dumped the Stevie Wonder version and stuck with the original. At least now David A. has a chance for redemption and growth. He'll be back.

Top performances: David Cook, Chikezie

Most likely to go home: Kristy Lee Cook or David Hernandez

My thoughts on the evening:

Chikezie really surprised me tonight. When the song started with the banjo, I was all set to hate it - but was plesantly surprised.

I'm starting to really enjoy David Cook - he's got a good rocker voice that I think would sell some albums.

Brook White is doing really well with her slow paced, feeling filled songs. I don't know that it'll get her to the end, but it'll get her an album.

Kristy Lee Cook is definitely my pick to go home this week. It's almost as though she was singing the song sped up with the wrong instrument arrangement in the background. It was a train wreck!

This was my first full viewing of AI this season, and I was not disappointed. It started a little weak, got much stronger in the middle, and then erupted into chaos at the end. Brilliant!

My favorite performance of the night was Carly Smithson. Yay for her! With all this talk that the guys have the upper hand this year (and I do agree with that), she is a real stand-out for the women.

Big surprise of the evening: Chikezie! He looked like he was having so much fun, it was infectious!

Little surprise of the evening: David Cook. As Mollee posted earlier, I didn't want to like this guy at first either. And here's why: he looks like a hobbit. And I am not anti-hobbit. I just don't think hobbits rock. But after last week and this week, I have to remind myself that if I can buy Dominic Monaghan (a living, breathing hobbit if ever there was one) as a rocker on Lost, I can give David C. a chance. Rock on, hobbit!

I enjoyed Brooke enjoying her experience. Melinda Doolittle redux.

I've fallen in love with Michael Johns, and it had nothing to do with his performance. His accent is lovely, and I'm positive he had a "Vegemite" shirt on in one of his childhood photos. If asked, I wouldn't be opposed to having his babies.

I hadn't put together the David Cook/Dominic Monaghan (as Charlie on Lost) connection together until your post. He does bear a striking resemblance to "Charlie." All he needs is some tape on his fingers and a nasty coke habit.

P.S. I read another blog today talking about Brooke playing the piano shoeless that went on to say that if David C. did that, they fully expected to see a pair of hairy hobbit feet.

Beatles songs on Idol? From what I heard, it was not good for the contestants or the songs. Too bad they were put on the market a few years ago to the highest bidder (Michael Jackson). I'm surprised Donald Trump hasn't puchased "Baby you're a rich man" for his own personal anthem, or that Elliot Spitzer isn't using "Can't buy me love" as background music for his public apology.

Can it be true? Beatles songs will dominate not one but two theme nights?

HUH?

I don't know about you, but I'm ready to move on. To quote Amanda Overmyer's song choice, you can't do that.

Shocker! Kristy Lee Cook lives to deliver another crappy song next week.

Unfortunately, that meant that David Hernandez got the boot which is a real shame. David H. may have been the source of controversy, but he had a good voice and some solid performances. I think he would have delivered a few more, too, if he would have stuck around.

Back to page top

I again had to watch AI on delay so I was looking at the Tuesday performances as the Wednesday elimination show was being recorded on my DVR.

I knew going in (thanks to my sister, who knew I didn't watch yet but felt the need to dish) that Chikezie did "awesome," David A. was awful and Kristy Lee "better go home."

I didn't have advance knowledge of David H. but, I have to admit, his performance was not pretty (though I am a fan).

I didn't think Kristy Lee was as horrible as I'd prepared for -- and I also think it would have sounded better if the band had slowed down a bit.

As for the bottom three, I think Ramielle should have been there instead of Syesha -- but, then again, I didn't vote this week ;-)

Overall, I think the contestants this season are better than last year -- so why can't the show choose a genre to showcase some of this talent?

Back to page top

In the spirit of Beatles week, we watched "Across the Universe" last night. The movie loosely ties together the love story of Jude and Lucy using nothing but -you guessed it- Beatles music.

I would have loved to have someone videotaping our faces while we watched this because I know there was a point about an hour or so into the movie where everything deteriorated into something that I can only imagine was designed to be watched while on drugs (it involved a circus-like atmosphere with gigantic wooden hands).

Still, the music was good and provided some pretty decent interpretations of the Beatles' catalog. Wonder if the AI kids were allowed to watch?
