American Idol: All that glitters isn't gold
April 15, 2008 - 8:18pm — Mollee Francisco
What I would have given to have been a fly on the wall when producers told the contestants they would be tackling songs from the Mariah Carey catalog. Did they have to get out the smelling salts? Bring in a fainting couch? Oxygen? Talk about a daunting task - especially for the guys. But, surprise, surprise, the guys actually rose to the occassion and delivered some top notch performances that varied greatly from the originals (minus David Archuleta, who, in the case of Mariah Carey night, gets lumped in with the girls.) Where the girls (and David A.) suffered comparisons to Miss Big Voice, the guys got freedom of expression. And the rest of us benefited from that. What did you think? Who did you love? Who did you hate? Who surprised you the most? Here are my thoughts: Singer: David Archuleta Song: When You Believe Rants & Raves: David A. hits the stage in leather pants. Wowza. You'd think it was Harley Davidson night! Not sure how the pants fit in with "When You Believe" from The Prince of Egypt soundtrack, but whatever. David A. can sing. Yada yada yada. Can he sing anything but big ballads? That remains to be seen. If he doesn't stretch his skill set soon, he's definitely destined for a life hawking Time Life collections on late night television. Carly Smithson Without You
Well Carly looked good tonight, didn't she? I liked her lower register early on though she didn't show great comfort with singing low and controlled. It wasn't until she started belting things out that she seemed more in her groove. Unfortunately, I liked the restrained bits better. The judges are generous to keep encouraging her, but she has yet to hit one out of the park. How many more chances will she get? Syesha Mercado Vanishing
Props to Syesha for not going with a big Mariah Carey ballad. I was worried. I thought this had a nice jazzy vibe at the beginning. It wasn't hard to envision Syesha putting it down at a smoky jazz club. But then we have to remind the audience that she's got a big voice and the impressive first half of the song is washed away by an excess of vocal gymnastics. Just sing, will ya? Hero Back to the bread and butter piano. Like it. I, too, am a fan of the singer-songwriter vibe she gives off. I think she has a good ear for creating nice MTV-Unplugged type songs. This acoustical version worked well and allowed her to put her own stamp on an overdone song. She got a bit rushed and out of control at the end, but I don't think it will hurt her. Kristy Lee Cook Forever Kristy Lee appeared to start the song in pain and things never got a whole lot better. The Patsy Cline - country vibe was ok on the verses, but the choruses proved to be a challege to hitting the right notes. On the brighter side, Kristy Lee looked gorgeous tonight - very 60s fembot-like. David Cook Always Be My Baby Admittedly, this is one of my favorite M.C. songs so I was curious to see what David C. would do with it. Considering the theme, he gets big points for trying. This is a catalog that certainly doesn't lend itself to rocking out, but David C. somehow made it work. I couldn't focus too much on the lyrics because they don't have a very masculine ring to them. By the time he started wailing and ad-libbing at the end, I was sold. Jason Castro I Don't Wanna Cry Looking smoking hot tonight. Sorry but I've got a mad crush on this one and have to give that disclaimer before I start my critique. I liked what Jason did with the song. Up until the chorus, I barely recognized it. Again, big fan of the singer-songwriter vibe. This song I could have seen in the background of a television show or movie. Top performances: David Cook, Jason Castro Most likely to go home: Kristy Lee Cook, Carly Smithson TELL US: Do you have a favorite performance from last night? Who's going home? I love that the judges are...
Back to page topI love that the judges are always telling the contestants not to sing Whitney/Mariah/Celine, and then the producers go and set up Mariah night. Genius.
I had no idea I was such an MC fan (at least classic MC) until some of my faves were rolled out tonight.
I knew someone would pick Vanishing (my all-time #1 MC fave), I just pictured Brooke instead. But to Syesha's performance I must say, in the words of my 18-month-old daughter, "No, no, no, no, no." She took a beautiful, simple song (as simple as an MC song can be) and just oversang it. She's much too dramatic for me. In the past few weeks her inner diva has peeked out, and I'm not sure she's ready to fill any diva shoes just yet.
I'm not a big Hero fan, but I thought Brooke did it justice with her own twist. I do wish she had more confidence in herself. When the camera was on close-up, especially during the latter part of the song, it looked like her whole body was shaking. Poor thing. You're doing just fine.
As usual, I really enjoyed David C.'s performance. I was anxiously awaiting his turn to see what song he would pick and how he would do it. Scary though--ABMB turns into a bit of a stalker song when sung by a rocker dude.
Why does Jason always look like he is in pain when he sings? This is really an issue for me.
Can we also talk about how...
Back to page topCan we also talk about how orange M.C.'s face was last night? It seemed to set off the mismatched blacks of her top and high-waisted pants. Yikes!

If I had a favorite -- or at...
Back to page topIf I had a favorite -- or at least a most-known -- Mariah song, it would be "Hero" and I didn't like the Brooke version of it -- too slow and pained.
I very much enjoyed Jason's performance -- but I'm wondering why the judges haven't said anything about his facial expressions as they have to previous contestants.
I definitely agree with Simon -- the guys stole the show!
My pick for bottom three are Brooke, Syesha and Kristy; my sister has Carly in Syesha's place. Neither of us predicted last week so who knows what will happen tonight...
New feature: We're counting...
Back to page topNew feature: We're counting how many times Paula uses the word "great" in her critiques of the Idol contestants. It's amusing to say the least (it's not like anyone is really paying attention to what she's saying). Last night she was 5 for 7.

And out of those 5 times,...
Back to page topAnd out of those 5 times, how many times was the "great" referring to how someone looked, as opposed to their performance?
Bye bye Miss American Pie -...
Back to page topBye bye Miss American Pie - Kristy Lee Cook takes her final bow in what can only be described as a BDT moment. That's "bout dang time" for the uninitiated.

Well, I got the bottom three...
Back to page topWell, I got the bottom three dead on -- just didn't get rid of my least favorite, Syesha.
I didn't hate KLC throughout the competition and she was no Haley Scarnato (as one unnamed fiance categorized her). Plus, even though I would rather have seen Amanda tour with the top 10, KLC did finish one better than Haley, leaving the show at #7 so she had to bring something to the table.
Who's gonna bet that she gets her horse back now?
On to Broadway night we go....
Back to page topOn to Broadway night we go. Andrew Lloyd Webber to be the guest mentor on next week's show.
Any musical faves you're hoping to hear?

Back to page topEvita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom of the Opera, Cats - what's your favorite Andrew Lloyd Webber-penned tune? What ones can't you stand?

I don't want to hear Syesha...
Back to page topI don't want to hear Syesha singing "Don't Cry for Me," that's for sure. But, my guess is, that will be her pick.
I love most everything from "Phantom," though some might be difficult as a solo.
My sister thinks they chose this genre specifically to cater to David Archuleta but I'm not so sure show tunes are anyone's friend in this kind of competition.
There is a rock version of...
Back to page topThere is a rock version of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" that David Cook could pounce on. Strangely, Sinead O'Conner also does a pretty good rendition of the song (she does it straight which is the biggest shock for me.)
