American Idol: Tribute to the Bleak Gees
May 8, 2007 - 8:26pm — Mollee Francisco
If Bon Jovi night turned out to be a pleasant surprise, Bee Gees night was the exact opposite- a total disaster. Of course, maybe this shouldn't have been surprising. The Bee Gees catalogue is full of songs performed in harmony by a group of singers. That's pretty hard to replicate in a solo singing competition. And that high falsetto would have been a challenge for anyone. In retrospect, this might have been the night for the now-ousted Chris Richardson's to shine. Too bad for him. Too bad for the remaining contestants and too bad for the viewers. Here are my thoughts: Singer: Melinda Doolittle Songs: Love You Inside Out and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart Rants & raves: "Love You Inside Out" was a decent vocal but the performance itself lacked Melinda's usual spark. Perhaps she wasn't happy with Bee Gees night either. "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" was easily the best performance of the night. I liked the jazzy beginning, but it was her break out on the bridge, with a nice lead up and a solid delivery that makes her the one to beat, still. Blake Lewis You Should Be Dancing and This is Where I Came In First of all, Blake came closer than anyone else to matching that Bee Gees falsetto. It was almost scary that he could sing like that. I thought his treatment of "You Should Be Dancing" was cool with the break beats. However, on "This Is Where I Came In" I wholeheartedly have to agree that not every song needs the beatboxing treatment. It gets old. Still, I didn't hate this song. For Blake, it was a good choice because he could do what he wanted with it and most people would have nothing to compare his performance to. That being said, it was still a lackluster, B-sides kind of song that doesn't win you the plaudits on Idol. Lakisha Jones Staying Alive and Run to Me Oh Lakisha. You made up so much ground last week only to come back and blow it. "Staying Alive" was a death sentence. That song has been sung a million times and it's never sung as well as the original (which again was sung by a GROUP). Ugh. Bad move. On "Run to Me" Kiki attempted to pull it back and show off a controlled vocal performance. The vocal was fine, but the song was less-than-dazzling and was missing any emotion. This could sadly be the end of the road for her. I'm aching for Bon Jovi night right now. Jordin Sparks To Love Somebody and I Am A Woman In Love Jordin sounded great during the rehearsal clip but something got lost in translation on "To Love Somebody." Maybe it was the overpowering background singers on the chorus. Whatever it was, the song was a bit sloppy up until the very end.I'm not sure that was enough to turn it around, however. "I Am A Woman in Love" was a great song choice - the best song choice of the night. Again, the rehearsal clip built us up for a possible showstopper, but it didn't happen. Somewhere in the middle of the song, Jordin lost her pitch and never got it back. The result was an absolute disaster. Top performance: Melinda Doolittle Most likely to go home: Blake, Lakisha, Jordin - take your pick, but really, whoever picked Bee Gees night is the one that needs to be punished here. Clicking through the Bee...
Back to page topClicking through the Bee Gees: Their Greatest Hits on Amazon.com this morning trying to figure out if Bee Gees night had to be the mess that it was. Could the contestants have picked songs that would have turned the night around? (Admittedly, my familiarity with the Bee Gees doesn't extend too far beyond "Staying Alive")
I stand by my belief that Bee Gees night came too late in the competition, but it turns out there are some numbers that may have suited the singers better than those that were chosen.
Jordin still wins the prize for best song choice. "To Love Somebody" was a solid pick and "I Am A Woman In Love" was an advantageous choice but a great song (check out Barbra Streisand's definitive version).
This morning I stumble across "I Started a Joke" and I'm disappointed that no one picked this. The lyrics are sad (see sample lyric below) but would have offered the chance for someone to show a controlled performance that still has some soaring vocals. It's a melancholy song but it has a great vibe to it.
Sample lyric: I started a joke, which started the whole world crying,
but I didn't see that the joke was on me, oh no.
Or what about "First of May"? The words are sweet and the melody is simple - reminiscent of early Beatles. Actually, this reminds me a bit of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" by Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand.
Sample lyric: When I was small, and Christmas trees were tall,
We used to love while others used to play.
Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by,
Some one else moved in from far away.
And there are a host of other good picks that fell by the wayside. What about "Emotion"? Destiny's Child covered this a few years ago and Jordin, Melinda or Lakisha could have had a home run if they had given it a whirl.
"How Deep Is Your Love" would have been a chance to show off range. "Guilty" is another Barbra Streisand tune that any of the girls could have tackled. And I have no problems envisioning Mindy Doo or Kiki doing "If I Can't Have You" or "Islands In the Stream."
Side note: I realized as I went through this list that I actually own a Bee Gees cassette (that's right, cassette). I'm suddenly transported back to sixth grade when I fell in love with "One" and purchased the single from someplace like K-Mart. Too funny.
In any case, I hope the AI producers realized the disaster they created last night and steer clear of any ABBA night in future seasons.
A few more thoughts from last night - Is it just me or does Barry Gibb sound like Sean Connery? We had a great time mimicking his strange accent. And finally, did Blake run into a freak bleach shower before his second song last night. I did not understand the skunk streak in his hair or the way his shirt seemed to randomly lose the plaid pattern on the left sleeve. Bleach shower is the best explanation I can come up with.

The Brothers Gibb (Bee Gees)...
Back to page topThe Brothers Gibb (Bee Gees) had an impressive body of work long before the disco era. Well-crafted pop songs and impressive harmonies.
"Lonely Days" (lonely nights, where would I be without my woman...) would have been a good choice for Blake to really get the crowd going.
What show was I watching...
Back to page topWhat show was I watching last night??? I completely missed Blake's beat boxing and bleach shower in the second song (which I actually enjoyed). Perhaps I was enjoying the performance too much. And it irks me that the judges slam him for weeks...go back to being original, not everything has to be a straight performance, yadda yadda yadda...and then slam him for beat boxing last night. Whatev.
I was really hoping for "How Deep is Your Love" and "Emotions" last night. Perhaps next season!
I did catch the Sean Connery accent. I couldn't decide if it was real-life Sean Connery or the SNL Jeopardy Sean Connery. Either way, I enjoyed it!
Since I'm sure Jordin is safe (as is Melinda), I hope Lakisha goes home. However, I think it may be Blake's time. :(
