American Idol: One rocking blaze of glory

» Read similar stories filed under:

Bon Jovi turned out to be a bon nuit (that's good night in French) for Idol. It didn't look good on paper, considering there's nary a rocker in the bunch, but the Idols (perhaps feeling last week's unresolved votes weighing on them) showed up to play.

Here are my thoughts:

Singer: Phil Stacey

Song: Blaze of Glory

Rants & raves: Excellent song choice and it managed to go well with his new countrified style. Statistically, Phil was the closest vocal match to Bon Jovi and it served him well. He hit it hard for the third week in a row and may have saved himself from the axe this week.

Jordin Sparks

Livin' on a Prayer

Well, finally the teenager shows that she is fallible. I liked the outfit - thought she played the rocker part well. The singing, on the other hand, left a bit to be desired. She did ok on the choruses but the verses were really rough. She's probably worked hard enough in previous weeks to stick around but from here on out, she has to be 'on' at all times.

Lakisha Jones

This Ain't A Love Song

Kiki showed why she is supposed to be in this contest. With the right song, she is brilliant. This was a great song for her. She was able to be controlled and still get some of her beloved big notes in. She could easily record this song and have a hit.

Blake Lewis

You Give Love A Bad Name

This week was do or die for Blake and he 'did.' Singing a straight rock song wasn't going to work for Blake and he needed to reestablish his funky side after several weeks of playing it straight. What better than a remix of "You Give Love A Bad Name"? It was a very original take on the Bon Jovi classic and should keep him around after this week. This kid could have a career in the funky remix biz.

Chris Richardson

Wanted Dead or Alive

After Chris Daughtry nailed this song last year, it was going to be an uphill climb for Chris Richardson. He needed to eclipse Daughtry's performance to stay and he didn't even come close. He's got the best chance of going home this week.

Melinda Doolittle

Have A Nice Day

Amazing. Even out of her element, Melinda is fun to watch. It was a little to gospel-y at times for me but considering her challenge, she gave it her all and turned in a great performance on a tough night.

Top performances: Lakisha Jones, Blake Lewis

Most likely to go home: If I were a betting gal, I'd go with Chris Richardson for sure. And other than Melinda, anyone else could theoretically join him.

Blake was my favorite last night. He had the b---- to get up and remix a famous Bon Jovi song. You gotta give him props for that. He's extremely talented. As far as who I didn't really feel the love for - it was Chris (Timberlake) Richardson. His voice just sounds so strained when he sings. I think he should go for sure, but as far as who should join him - I think that's up in the air. Jordin had a bad night, but that girl can perform - I sure hope her fans voted last night.

I felt compelled to vote for Lakisha last night (my first votes of the season) and was able to get through quite a few times which makes me very, VERY nervous for her tonight.

Loved, loved, LOVED Blake's...

Loved, loved, LOVED Blake's performance last night! He did his own thing with a classic, and isn't that what the judges are always harping on. JennyJean's right...the boy's got talent! I hope that performance was enough to keep him in the competition. (I did try voting for him, but only got through once...not that I tried very hard.)

Melinda also blew me away! I was so afraid for her after Jordin's dismal showing, but she did her thing, dawg! I love that girl to bits!

If I had my druthers, Chris and Jordin would be going home. I know Jordin is probably safe, so I'll realistically pick Chris and Phil to go home. I've been a Phil fan since day one (missing your daughter's birth be darned), but I just don't think things are going his way. Although I did hear that he was Sanjaya's replacement for "Vote for the Worst." Not that I agree with that choice.

How crazy is it that we will be down to the final four? Can't wait to see how it plays out!
