Chaska Police : Unreasonably Aggressive & Disrespectful

» Read similar stories filed under:

Late Friday Night / Early Saturday morning, walking home from a friend's house sober I was stopped by Chaska Police. First I was accused of beating up a girl at a bar. After I denied having been any part of any incident of that sort that night, I was asked if I was breaking into cars and stealing things.
As a recent graduate of an out of state university who moved back to work and live in my hometown, I couldn't believe I was being accused of these things simply because of my age and being on foot.

After the barrage of accusations, I was asked what was in my backpack. When I told the officer it was my computer, he asked what kind. I replied telling him that it was an Apple Macbook Pro.
The officer replied, sneering, "Oh, you're one of those guys." As a homosexual male, I wasn't sure if this was an attack on my sexuality, or simply yet another person not aware of the superiority of the Macintosh OS.

After the officer had my id ran to check for warrants and it came back clear, he shone his flashlight in my face and again sneered "you have a goodnight sir."

The most riduclous part was when the first officer asked the second cop on the scene "is this the guy we're looking for?"
and the second cop looked at me, laughed and said "no."
At this point the first cop said "To tell you the truth, its been a slow night and we're bored."

Perhaps the police should find better things to do with their time than harass people who've done nothing wrong. It provides little inspiration to stay in this town and give back to the community.

Has anybody else had similar encounters with the Chaska Police?

Butch up (mature up) young progressive.
Of course, I really don't know what tone you took with the police. Your post here may, or may not, give us a clue.
But, I advise you, that whatever the tone a police officer takes with you: Always be polite, direct and give just a little detail, for credibility. And, of course, obey the law, both for credibility, and to avoid legal consequences.
The police have a job to do. Whether they are always polite or not, is secondary, and it sometimes depends on your tone.

And you wonder why you're called "one of those guys" when you followed that thought with a comment about how unenlightened the poor police officer was because he was not aware of of the obvious superiority of your Macbook? That and putting an Apple bumper sticker on your car is why you get that rap.

For the record:

1) I was polite, compliant, and answered all questions asked me truthfully, with enough detail. I guess from your suggestion to butch up (I am actually butch, and not effeminate, by the way) I need to acquire the cynicism of adults and just know that the police are rarely polite and respectful, even with people who've done nothing wrong. Obviously, most cops are cops for the power, gun and badge, and not the public service aspect.

2) I've no Apple bumpersticker. I also simply said "unaware" because that usually is the case for people who make statements like that officer did. If I were to delve into judgements of this officer's technical savvy I'd have much more to say.

You sound like you may have handled the situation reasonably.
But I want to add that, in 40 years as a driver, and after 25 years as 2nd or 3rd shift worker, I have been stopped by the police many, many times.
I can remember rude police in only one stop. I didn't let it bother me.
