Brrr...Cold enough for you?

» Read similar stories filed under:

As the old saying goes, is it cold enough for you? If not, just be patient....more cold is on the way! Our temperature in Chaska dipped down to -12 on Monday night (Jan 14), but has rebounded slightly since then. However, much colder air will arrive by Friday, with our daily high temperatures struggling to climb above zero over the weekend!

So how low will the mercury drop during during this next cold stretch? My guess is -18.

Our predictions were both very close - in fact, it looks like we spilt the difference! The official over-night low temperature in Chaska on both Friday and Saturday night dropped to a chilly -19 degrees. And, just in case anyone is wondering, our high temperature on Saturday reached all the way up to -3 degrees.

That should be the last of the really cold temperatures for a while, however it will still be a long wait for spring...

That's pretty low.

I heard some area Boy Scouts were sleeping outside Friday night to earn the "Zero Hero" award. They definitely earned it.

How does -19 compare with last year's winter low?

Last year at this time, we were suffering through a January with highs in the 20's and lows in the teens.....above zero!

However, the first half of February (2007) provided low temperatures that were below zero almost every night (with the coldest being -21 on February 6th).

Boy Scouts sleeping outside in sub-zero temps?

And my daughter was complaining it was too cold in the house (I keep the thermostat at 62 and have threatened to break her arm if she ups it again -- this after she cranked it to 80 one day last weekend).

She's been sleeping in long pajama pants and a hooded sweatshirt under a sheet, blanket and down comforter. If she complains again, I may set up a tent and let her pretend she's a Boy Scout.

What a roller-coaster ride!...

What a roller-coaster ride! On Monday afternoon, we reached a high temperature of 43 degrees...and, yes, that was rain you heard hitting your window on Monday evening (0.02" in Chaska)! Unfortunately, what goes up must come down, so here comes the other foot....our overnight low by Tuesday night will drop down to near 20 below zero! Then, after a cold and windy day or two, we will begin a slow warmup toward near normal temperatures by the weekend. January in Minnesota is seldom dull.

-17 last night in Chaska (January 29), but that should be the worst of it....hopefully! Temperatures will slowly warm up as the weekend approaches. In the mean time, do what you would if you were stuck upside-down on a roller coaster.....hang on tight!

Another chilly night in Chaska...-10 on Monday night (Feb 18). We may see -14 on Tuesday night, with high temperatures on Wednesday struggling to reach single digits above zero, before a welcome warmup moves into town by Saturday. Have we seen the last of our below zero nights this winter? Stay tuned...
