Will we vote a black man into the White House?

Over the weekend, Illinois Senator Barack Obama officially announced his candidacy for President of the United States of America. "As Lincoln organized the forces arrayed against slavery, he was heard to say: 'Of strange, discordant, and even hostile elements, we gathered from the four winds, and formed and fought to battle through,'" Obama said to some 15,000 people gathered in Springfield. "That is our purpose here today. That's why I'm in this race. Not just to hold an office, but to gather with you to transform a nation." His announcement has stirred debate as to whether or not the United States is ready to vote for its first minority president. Obama is the son of a Kenyan man and a woman from Kansas. The popular Obama enters the fray with a host of viable contenders for the Democratic nomination including former Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards and New York Senator Hilary Clinton. SOUND OFF: Does race or sex matter at the polls? Will voters send a black man to the top office in the country? What about a woman?

I'd like to see a black...
Back to page topI'd like to see a black woman run for president. There's one in particular whom I think would do an amazing job. And I think she could win. But she doesn't want to run, so my hopes have been dashed.

Back to page topRight now, the media is having a love fest with Obama.
Lets not forget, its a long ways to the next election, and what every seasoned politician knows is, you don't want to peak too early.
I haven't heard any hard questions, and his few slip ups go by the wayside-for now.
The national media likes a horse race, and right now they have one between Obama and Clinton, (with Edwards gaining)
Doesn't matter if one is black and one is a woman, we have an early race and that is all that matters.
We'll get down to the hard questions later.
I still think he's in this for one reason, to get invited to run as vice president.
He's a long shot, and I bet deep down he knows that, and this is a great way to get national exposure, before things get really interesting, where he'll have to come up with actual plans and ideas for the future.
Should get interesting...
