Spring training is here, the first game is today, and all is well with Twins baseball.
Well...almost
It is year 10 of trying to get a Twins stadium built, and like all the other ones, this seems to be going down in flames.
The latest is that the last discussion held with the landowners (according to them) was 2 years ago.
Kind of like selling your house at prices from 2 years ago.
We had no trouble giving money to the U for a new football stadium, even though it was their idea to move to the Metrodome, and then tear down the old one.
I have yet to hear anyone talk about parking at the new football stadium when it opens.
Should be interesting.
So once again we start a new season, and a new round of talks that will probably go nowhere.
Why is it that people have always been against a pro stadium being built?

I don't think that people...
Back to page topI don't think that people oppose building a new stadium for a professional sports franchise but the idea of Joe Six Pack and Suzie Soccer Mom having to foot the bill for what is essentially a playground for childish and often irresponsible millionaires is the major sticking point. Not everyone uses it unlike public roads, parks and schools. It is an entertainment venue for a select few who pay a fee for admittance. Taxpayers wouldn't be asked to help finance a new country club so why should we foot the bill for a stadium that, like the Target Center, the powers that be will claim is outdated in a mere 15 years? I think that Carl Pohlad could easily afford to build any stadium he wanted to but wants to see if he can steal the funds from the public first.
We are asked to pay for a...
Back to page topWe are asked to pay for a lot of things through special fianancing.
Right now Mall of America is going to the state to ask for money for their huge expansion.
After what they say they contribute each year to the state through taxes and employment, it may be hard not to give them the money.
Going back to the stadium issue, I am still curious why there was no uproar from "Joe Six Pack" and others regarding the new football stadium for the Gophers?
I agree that in a perfect world owners of sports and other businesses should pay, but reality is that if one city/state says no, they go somewhere else, along with the increase in jobs and tax revenues.
Everyone but a college team.
I'm always amused by the...
Back to page topI'm always amused by the people who come out of the woodwork to detest contributing to a new stadium. It seems to be the fashionable thing to do. Far too often I hear the argument "Our tax dollars could be going towards education". Okay, fine. But were you fighting for this cause BEFORE the stadium issue? Were you lobbying for more money to be invested in our schools? Probably not. And, in fact, you were probably the same person who voted NO for our new high school. It's embarrassing!
As soon as these people quit talking out of both sides of their mouths, I will consider listening to their nonsense.
Consider the benefits of something like a new baseball stadium before you form your opinion. The State receives millions and millions of dollars from various taxes including players income tax. Also, no one can argue what the Target Center did for Block E or what the XCel Energy Center has done for Saint Paul. In both cases they have single-handedly rejuvenated their respective communities.
Not to mention, most every stadium plan has been based largely on user fees (stadium parking, etc...) and county-specific taxes. Meaning, if you don't live in Hennepin County, you're most likely not going to pay and penny anyway!
Can a legitimate argument be made AGAINST a new stadium? Possibly. But I have yet to hear one!
With all due respect,...
Back to page topWith all due respect, Drayzen, the good reason that government shouldn't be funding a new stadium (or the Mall of America, or the moving of the Ohnsorgs, or whatever) is that these things are private businesses. Government has no business funding this, period, and they've frankly got a lousy record at "investment" in this regard. For example, of the postwar (1950s-1970s) stadiums, only Dodger Stadium ever made money. It's also the only one that was entirely privately funded.
Put simply, government "investments" tend to be lousy because those running the show aren't risking their own money. They therefore take risks that (by definition) the private sector is not willing to take.
The Twinkies had a nice outdoor stadium that they could have kept up and improved for a fraction of the cost of a new stadium. If they had, they would have saved the taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars spent on creating the Rollerdome, the Mall of America, and other government funded boondoggles. Let's not forget our history just because our ball team wants a new park.
The 2001 NCAA Final Four...
Back to page topThe 2001 NCAA Final Four basketball tournament held at the Metrodome brought in $60 million to our local economy. That's as much as the Metrodome cost to build!
If we're faced with helping build a new stadium or watching our team relocate or be contracted, what do you suppose we should do? We swallow our pride and realize, yes, we are being backed into a corner by a 92 year-old billionare in Carl Pohlad and we just do it!
When tax dollars are involved, too many people are too quick to say no before they have all the facts. This is a dangerous attitude.
Over the course of the new stadium's existence, we as taxpayers will see a return on our investment like no other. That simply isn't even up for debate!
Drayzen, If its such a great...
Back to page topDrayzen, If its such a great deal you and your falmily go buy the old stadium and get in on the money. Public money should not be used to fund priviate bussiness.
Wow cjrief. That's an...
Back to page topWow cjrief. That's an intelligent comment. Public money is used to aid private businesses every day. All I can do is laugh at statements like that. Funny, I bet you weren't down at the Capitol lobbying for the State to refuse the millions and millions of dollars received from taxes on the Metrodome from the thousands of events that have taken place there.
You don't want to invest, but you'll sure stick your hand in the cookie jar once we have!
If someone told you they could turn your $10 into $500 would you let them? Of course you would. This is an INVESTMENT! Uneducated opinions like cjrief's are what holds this state back.
Wow Drayzen at it again....
Back to page topWow Drayzen at it again. It's Uneducated Poeple like you that
have turned our Government in to a Free For All. Work for it ,
you may feel good about yourself.

Back to page topWork for it? Hahaha! I'm a construction laborer. Please don't talk to me about working for something because you simply aren't qualified to do so.
And it's absolutely classic that you call me uneducated, but your very next word is mispelled.
I don't even have to discredit your statements. You do a great job yourself buddy. Continue arguing with me. It's great entertainment! Haha.
