Statewide smoking ban
February 1, 2007 - 3:42pm — Mollee Francisco
Late last month, state legislators introduced the "Freedom to Breathe Act of 2007" in Minnesota. The proposed legislation would "expand the ban on smoking in public places to include restaurants and bars." The ban would apply to the entire state. Currently, about 40 percent of Minnesotans are already living under such a ban, including the cities of Duluth, Minneapolis and St. Paul. The only exceptions to the ban would be at traditional Native American ceremonies, private places and tobacco shops. To view the bill, click here. Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington have similar smoking bans. Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle said last week that he was planning to propose a statewide ban for Wisconsin as well as $1.25 cigarette tax increase. SOUND OFF: What do you think of a statewide smoking ban?

Interestingly enough,...
Back to page topInterestingly enough, France's smoking ban went into effect today. It is estimated that between a quarter and a third of the French smoke resulting in more than 60,000 deaths a year.
The French ban is a graduated ban with basically everything except bars and restaurants being affected as of Feb. 1. The second part of the ban (bars and restaurants) goes into effect in early 2008.
I couldn't believe it when Ireland instituted a smoking ban and now France? What is this world coming to when two countries whose image is so closely connected to the cigarette begin to crack down? Mon dieu!
