The Miracle of Pizza

» Read similar stories filed under:

In 1960, Robert “Rup” and Mary “Mert” Burkhart were apparently the first to serve pizza in Chaska at their 3.2 tavern “Rup’s Bar.”

At the time, the Herald announced that “Pizza – an Italian dish that is fast rating with the hot dog and hamburger as an American ‘snack’ is now being offered locally.”

Later, J’s Restaurant (now Bobby K’s Embers America) was renowned for its pizza. Now pizza is offered in several locals in Chaska. (Papa Murphy’s is the latest to open.)

Most of us have memories pertaining to pizza. Parents use it to feed masses of youth congregating at their house. College students use it to survive. Offices order it for lunch.

Do you have a fond memory of eating at, or working for, a hometown pizza parlor? Does anyone remember Chaska’s “first” pizza at Rup’s or J’s?

ZZZAAA ... my first memories...

ZZZAAA ... my first memories of pizza are the nasty-tasting Chef Boyardee make-your-own (out of a box), with the tiny tin can of sauce AND the 99-cents each Totinos Party Pizza. With a family of 7, budget was more important than taste in our home!

Locally, I'd say the best in the area is the double-crust handmade pizza at DaBoars Bar & Grill in Cologne. The deluxe serves our family with leftovers to boot - great tasting and affordable.

Out-of-the Chaska area: Basilio's Pizza in Faribault is great stuff. But at the top of my list - Mabe's Pizza in beautiful downtown Decorah, Iowa can't be beat. Not sure if it's the pizza that I enjoy most, or the memories of many late-night college feasts. Get the regular (pepperoni and sausage, cut into tiny squares). It's so popular with Luther alumni that many request deliveries and shipments to the Twin Cities and the Chicago-area. Really.

My mom used to make homemade pizzas on Sunday nights. My sister and I loved it because it was one meal we were actually allowed to help with. And by help I mean that we ate pieces of shredded cheese and slices of pepporoni.

My mom also used to make homemade pizza and no matter how hard I try, I can't replicate her magical recipe for sauce and the Ragu pizza sauce from the jar just doesn't cut it.

Have you tried fish pizza?
I don't have a great recipe for sauce or dough ... but I did see a sign outside the Pizza Ranch in Norwood Young America advertising "Fish and Seafood Pizza ... on Fridays during Lent." Hmmm ... not for me.

Fish pizza sounds gross. I'm not afraid to say it. Fish, octopus, squid, whatever does not belong on pizza dough. That is clearly a violation of the "good eats" act. Give me pepperoni any day.
