In the market for a castle? Buy Dracula's

If you've been looking for a great summer home in Transylvania, now's your chance. The Bran Castle, also known as Dracula's Castle, is now on the market. The only stipulation (other than having beaucoup $$$) is that the buyer should "respect the property and its history." The castle is called Dracula's castle for its ties to Prince Vlad the Impaler, who is said to have inspired Bram Stoker's Count Dracula with the manner in which he tortured his enemies. Prince Vlad is said to have spent one entire night in the castle. The 14th century castle is the Romania's top tourist spot, attracting 450,000 visitors a year (it is also listed in the book 1,000 Places to See Before You Die). It was seized by the country's communist government in the 40s and operated as a museum for the last half century. It was returned to a descendant of the ousted royal family in 2006 with the stipulation that it continue to be run as a museum until 2009. The sale of the castle and its 22-acre property could net more than $100 million. Tell us: How much would you pay to own a castle? What would you do with it? Because it has to do with...
Back to page topBecause it has to do with Dracula, I have to mention Chaska native Edward Van Sloan.
Van Sloan portrayed vampire hunter Von Helsing in the 1931 horror movie classic "Dracula," opposite screen legend Bela Lugosi. (See picture here.)
Van Sloan hunted down and ultimately destroyed Dracula (stake to the heart and all that jazz). In other movies, Van Sloan took on "Frankenstein" and "The Mummy."
Maybe there's a Van Sloan relative in the area who would like to by the castle and keep the world safe from vampires.
