Champagne wishes and fast food dreams

With little fanfare, the Chaska Hardee's closed its drive-thru window (and its doors) late last month. Within days, the marquee was blank and the trademark star was removed. This week, dumpsters have taken up residence in the parking lot.

While this is goodbye to Hardee's, it leaves an opening for a new restaurant to give it a go at the Yellow Brick Road location.

What would you like to see take over the old Hardee's?

Buffalo Wild Wings would be nice. The space is too small, but it would be nice somewhere in town. Anyone agree?

I'd like to see Chaska get a few restaurants that Chanhassen doesn't already have. Don't get me wrong, Buffalo Wild Wings is tasty but Chaska and Chan seem to have far too much overlap as is. My question is why hasn't anyone put in an Olive Garden out in this neck of the woods? Maybe not Chaska but the nearest one is Bloomington. Seems like a natural fit for Eden Prairie at least.

I'd like to see Chaska get good reasonable priced private owner restaurants. Enough chain type manufactured food around.

Amen to that.

Applebee's, Ruby Tuesday's, Champp's, Houlihan's and Pauly's all kind of seem the same. And is it a state law now that restaurants like these have multiple TV's going?

Later.

I agree, however, how many times has The Mill changed owners in the last 10 years? Is it even still open? When was the last time you visited? How often did you dine at Butch's before it burned?

If we want local businesses (and I do) - we have to support them. Same goes with garabe collectors (BFI vs WM vs Tidy, for instance), grocery stores (rainbow vs Target vs Cooper's), etc etc.

I agree that we need to support our local businesses. We go to the Pine Street Grille, rather than to someplace like Houlihan's, because we know that we're supporting a local business.

But (and there's always a but, isn't there?), the businesses in Chaska have to make sure that they are providing the right mix of products and services for the right price. We can't be asked to buy things we don't want or need, and we can't be asked to pay a significant premium to get them locally (although, I do support paying a bit extra to keep things in Chaska).

There was a great little shop in downtown Chaska that recently closed. The owner wrote a letter to the editor of the Herald lamenting her closure, and blaming the people of Chaska for not supporting her. But, her business was a quaint gift shop, and her prices were really high (I went in several times looking for bargains and came out empty-handed). In a town like Chaska, which still has a large middle-class population, you cannot expect people to spend their hard-earned dollars on $40 wreaths for Thanksgiving.

So, this became another topic entirely, but I wanted to point out that I am happy to support local businesses as long as their expectations are appropriately set for the market!

I would really like to see a Chucky Cheese come to town. My kids love it. As it is now the closest one is in Edina and the place is always full and is a really great place for kids to have birthday parties...

Someone mentioned Wendy's in their response and it was my understanding that Wendy's had expressed interest in building in the new business development at the corner of HW 41 and Engler. Then I heard that the City thought that this would create too much traffic as most of Wendy's traffic is drive-through.

What I fail to understand, if this reason is really true, is why one of the largest gas stations in the area (with at least 30 hoses) and a large daycare center were allowed to come into this development -- both which clearly have just as much traffic, if not more, than a Wendy's would generate.

We need variety. I was happy to hear that Arby's would open in the shuttered Hardee's location and that Ruby Tuesday's will open soon (if it has not already) and sure, these are not local restaurants, but they do provide opportunities for local jobs and they offer something besides pizza (unless it was something like a Pizza Ranch that offers something more). I also feel that competition is always good - it makes us all sharpen our pencils and try to provide better service.
