Pirates of the Caribbean
May 30, 2007 - 4:07pm — Mark Olson
I went to "Pirates of the Caribbean" last night. So far, I've gone to all of the Pirate movies at the theater. Combined with popcorn and beverage, I've probably spent about $50 on the franchise, so I guess I'm singlehandedly keeping Disney in business. The great thing about the movies is the incredibly rich set design. The designers obviously studied the original "Pirates" ride at Disneyland. This time the best scenes were those that made no sense. I think they were in Davy Jones Locker (or something like that). There are about 300 plot points in the movie, so I kind of lost track. Millions of rocks turning into crabs that carry a pirate ship across salt flats; Jack Sparrow stabbing, shooting and talking with himself; the entire ocean upside down. The movie was tough to follow, but it didn't make much difference. It was a fun ride. It was a bit ironic that the bad guy in the movie was a multinational corporation -- the East India Trading Company, with its conquering of the lawless Caribbean. I don't think Disney has ever backed away from expanding into overseas markets. Did you see the movie? What did you think? Can anyone answer any of these questions: What's with that rash on Jack Sparrow's cheek? Why does everyone have bad teeth except for Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan? How sad are you that "The Haunted Mansion," also based on a Disney ride, hasn't had a sequel? Why was the chick flick "Evening" previewed before the movie? Has anyone ever seen the other Disney classic "Blackbeard's Ghost"? When will Disney bring back Dean Jones?

Back to page topEven from the third row, in a full theater, I loved it.
How can you not love Pirates? Every scene is full from corner to corner with detail. Characters are stuffed in and pirate lore is exploited at every chance.
It is overload? Sure. Difficult for the casual viewer to take in with one viewing? Definitely.
I've watched the first Pirates more times than I care to admit but I still notice new elements with each viewing. That's what makes it so fun.
Now here's another question. Will there be a fourth one???

Back to page topJohnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, need I say any more? (I tried to post intelligently before I posted hormonally).

Gotta love a good pirate...
Back to page topGotta love a good pirate movie. Is this one rated "Arrrrr" for dialogue?
"Pirates" was too...
Back to page top"Pirates" was too long. That's what happens in sequels; directors overdevelop minor characters.
They should have spent more screen time on Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, and less on the deck hands with icky teeth.
(Swann is a lady turned pirate, so that explains her dental care. Will was a blacksmith apprentice, so they must have better hygiene than pirates, too.)
Although I was let down, I still love Disney films.
Another less-popular favorite: "The Gnome-Mobile" circa 1967. With the two kids from "Mary Poppins" and Walter Brennan starring as a Gnome named Knobby, it's adorable.

Back to page topThe Gnomemobile- I love it!!! "The gnomemobile, the gnomemobile, sooner or later we feel that we'll find where we roam in the gnomemobile - riding along in the gnomemobile." You just can't shake great lyrics like that. And all those little gnomes, too!

How can you not mention...
Back to page topHow can you not mention "Darby O'Gill and the Little People"? It's arguably one of the best leprechaun movies ever made. It also includes Sean Connery (pre-Bond, I think).
By the way, the fakey scene with the miniature Captain Jack Sparrows shows that even with an insane budget, "small people" technology hasn't come a long way since the years of "Darby O'Gill," "Fantastic Voyage," or "I Dream of Jeannie."
