Would you wake up at dawn to see The Dark Knight?

Seems midnight showings are no longer good enough to satisfy fans of the latest installment of Batman. Theaters are adding 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. showings of "The Dark Knight" to their schedules to meet demand.

Greatest love songs

No votes yet

Is it "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers? Perhaps Dan Fogelberg's classic "Longer"? Journey's "Open Arms"? Or Elvis's "Can't Help Falling in Love"?

Minnesota Public Radio's The Current (89.3 FM) is looking for the greatest love songs of all time. They'll play the top 50 as voted on by listeners on Valentine's Day starting at 7 p.m. Click here to cast your vote.

On the other hand, if you're recovering from a particularly heinous break-up you might want to get online on V-Day to hear the 50 greatest break-up songs of all time instead. You can vote on those, too. Click here to vote for your favorite break-up tune.

TELL US: What would you vote for as the greatest love song of all time? What about greatest break-up song?

Oh Mollee ... there's not...

Oh Mollee ... there's not enough room in this forum for me to list my all-time favorite "love" songs!! Too many sentimental favorites from the late 70s and early 80s that just take me back ... the classics of Journey, REO Speedwagon, Eagles, Lionel Richie and the Commodores and the ultimate in sap, Air Supply! Who can forget such timeless - really, they are timeless! - classics as "Open Arms," "Faithfully," "Endless Love," "Can't Fight This Feeling", "Shining Star," "You're Kiss is on My List," "Lost in Love," "All Out of Love." Check out this web site at http://www.romantic-lyrics.com/lyricsae.shtml.

And break-up songs? More classics ... "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover," "D-I-V-O-R-C-E," and the ultimate 1980 hit, "Love Stinks" by the J.Geils Band. The lyrics of which were written in my high school yearbook by someone who was giving me a serious "break-up" message!

You're totally going to go home and whip out some of the old 8-tracks, aren't you? And how rude to break up with someone via yearbook message. Whatever happened to "Have a great summer. See you around."???

Just the Way You Are is a great choice! I love the tempo of that song. Diana Krall did a very decent cover of it as well.

My top 10 favorite love...

Back to page top

My top 10 favorite love songs:

In a Sentimental Mood by John Coltrane and Duke Ellington (no lyrics but this instrumental is so beautiful it has to be a love song)

Hold You In My Arms by Ray Lamontagne

Something by The Beatles

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack

Lost in You by Garth Brooks (as Chris Gaines)

That's All by Nat King Cole or Michael Buble (any slow version will do)

Arms of a Woman by Amos Lee

Making Memories of Us by Keith Urban (I can't believe I put another country song on here but the lyrics are so sweet. I don't know what girl wouldn't marry a guy spouting this stuff)

The Way You Look Tonight by Tony Bennett (I love any song with a snare drum which is why I'm a sucker for all these standards)

The Very Thought of You by Nat King Cole (Nat King Cole could have filled this list with ease)

Great break-up songs:

Nobody Knows by Tony Rich Project (for when you're really sad)

Where Do Broken Hearts Go? by Whitney Houston (see above)

Goodbye My Lover by James Blunt (for when you think you're going to remain friends)

I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston (ditto)

6, 8, 12 by Brian McKnight (for when you're still sad after a long time)

Since You've Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson (for when you're finally over it)

It's not on the list, but I'd say the greatest love song/greatest break-up song combination is "Fairytale of New York" by the Irish band "The Pogues." It begins with fond memories, only to end with epithets being hurled between two spurned lovers.

As for the greatest love song, just check out any Frank Sinatra song on the Capitol Records label (particularly on the 1956 album "Songs for Swingin' Lovers").

Who sang the song that goes "All by myself, I'm gonna be, all by my self." ... Classic breakup. By the way, I'm working on a Southwest Metro Drug Task Force story. Not sure there is any linkage to this forum, however.

That was Eric Carmen, I believe. Do not ask me why I know these useless bits of information.

Mark - awesome Pogues reference. That song is great.

Good breakup songs:
"Positively 4th Street" and "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" by Bob Dylan

"Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers

"The Last Day of Our Acquaintance" by Sinead O'Connor

"Love is a Battlefield" by Pat Benetar

"Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac

"This Love" and "Not Coming Home" (actually the entire album "Songs About Jane") by Maroon 5

Pretty much anything by Rage Against the Machine (for those angry, angry moments)

"If I Can't Change Your Mind" by Sugar

"The Sweetest Thing, "With or Without You," "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" and "So Cruel" by U2

"Purple Rain" by Prince

There are also some reaaaaaaaaaalllyy good ones (really BAD good ones) on VH1.com: http://www.vh1.com/shows/dyn/awesomely_bad_breakup_songs/series_countdow...

Good love songs:
"In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel (incidentally, my wedding song)
